Sports Massage is a wonderful supplement to any athlete who is concerned about their performance and health. With multiple affects on various systems of the body, this healthcare program will enable the athlete to increase their aerobic capacity and stamina, increase strength and power and increase skill by relieving pain, speeding recovery, reducing risk of injury, and enhancing performance.
Sports massage is foremost circulatory. When there is a depletion of nutrients and oxygen to ones muscles, one may experience lower PH and increased fluid content in muscle post-exercise. Using massage techniques like compression, effleurage, and petrissage will move fluid through the circulatory system therefore bringing these vital properties back to the area and remove metabolic waste. This will help in speeding recovery from fatigue and/or injury thus increasing aerobic capacity and stamina.
Sports massage also has a great affect on the nervous system. Micro-tearing of muscle tissue may result in stiffness and discomfort. By using techniques such as stripping and melting, the therapist can unwind the pain-spasm-pain cycle by clearing trigger points on the affected area. With reduced pain, this enhances pleasure and ability to train.
Sports massage affects the connective tissue, which surrounds and creates muscle, by reducing the risk of injury. This work promotes the formation of healthy scar tissue. When techniques such as joint mobilization, stretching and cross fiber friction are used, they induce flexibility, mobility, and reweaving of damaged tissue to promote flexibility of the normal tissue. These effects will increase the skill, strength and power of the athlete.
Finally, sports massage will enhance performance. Massage is relaxing. It reduces anxiety, increases alertness and mental clarity, and helps the athlete achieve a state of health and balance. When one can relieve pain, reduce risk of injury and speed recovery from fatigue or injury, the athlete will be better able to increase their aerobic capacity and stamina, increase strength and power and increase skill. When acting on the whole person, massage increases the ‘lifetime’ of the athlete. Which athlete wouldn’t want that?
